선수들의 말부터 보자. "비행기 여행 때문은 아니다... 컨디션도 좋았다... 뭔가 크게 잘못되었지만 어디가 잘못되었는지조차 모를 정도로 어리둥절하다...
프랑스 전의 악몽이 재현된 재난(disaster)이다... 한국선수들의 몸놀림은 놀라왔고 수비수들은 항상 우리에게 선택을 강요했다... 너무 빠른 몸놀림 때문에 가까이 접근할 수가 없었다... 우리는 그림자를 쫓는 느낌이었고 항상 한박자 늦었다."

감독은 현재 여론에 의해 경질 위기를 맞고 있고 아시아 변방의 국가에서 프랑스 전과 동일하게 당한 수모 때문에 국민들과 선수들은 쇼크상태에 있다. 2진? 이건 2진이 아니라 감독이 필살의 정신으로 물갈이를 한 "새로운 팀"의 진용이다. 스코틀랜드로선 부임후 두게임 연속으로 지고나서 이번만은 이겨야 하는 경기였다. 스코틀랜드는 이 기사 외에 감독 문책론에 관한 기사를 대문짝만하게 싣고 있다.

인정할 것은 하자. 우리가 물론 프랑스에 비해 뒤지는 점도 많다. 특히 센터링이나 피니쉬가 그렇다. 하지만 미드필드의 기동력에서 세계수준에 근접해 있다. 프랑스와 경기를 가졌던 스코틀랜드 선수들 자신이 그렇게 말하고 있다.

Scots make woeful job of Korea plan

South Korean monks will throw open their doors to football fans at the
forthcoming World Cup - but, last night in Busan, Scotland's new
generation were the ones facing silent contemplation after repeating the
bad habits of Paris.
Defeat in the Stade de France to the likes of Zinedine Zidane, on the
opening night of the Berti Vogts revolution, was believed to be the
nadir of the Scotland international team - but at least it came at the
feet of the global champions.

In the futuristic Asiad Stadium, it was a nightmare revisited, while our
place on planet football hit another low as a side ranked 41st in the
world made us feel very minor in Asia.

Guus Hiddink's team scored four goals and could have netted more as the
youthful lineup selected by Vogts faced another cliff-like learning
curve with Euro 2004 qualifying looming.

Everton defender David Weir was candid enough to later admit the
performance was a 'disaster' and accepted the comparisons with Paris in
terms of Scotland chasing shadows.

Vogts cannot escape scrutiny for that, because tactically, he was
outfoxed by old friend Hiddink, with the German's diamond shape midfield
an unmitigated disaster in the first half-hour.

Debutants Scott Dobie and Maurice Ross were the only successes, although
to slaughter the displays of the likes of Michael Stewart, Gary Caldwell
and Garry O'Connor would be harsh.

That trio have probably played fewer than 100 games at first-team level
between them but, with so many senior players not here, Vogts was
entitled to ask questions of his youngsters.

Very probably he has had deselection answers supplied in his first three
games and, if Dobie blooms into the striker Scotland crave, then maybe
one day this Far East tour will be viewed as worthwhile.

But, for the moment, a feelgood factor emanating thousands of miles from
a thrilling Champions League Final event at Hampden was punctured in
spectacular fashion barely 12 hours later.

'It was all a bit of a disaster,' said Weir. 'They played well but we
did not. I cannot use jet-lag as an excuse. I wish I knew where we went
wrong.

'We did not get close enough to them. As a defender, they were always
asking you to make decisions.

'They had great movement and we couldn't get close enough. We were
caught on the back foot, but I still look upon it as an honour to
represent Scotland, regardless of what happens.

'I feel this is payback time for me. I went to France 98 and enjoyed the
good times, so now I must help others try and get to a major finals.

'It is up to the older players to learn, as well as the youngsters. I
have to show more responsibility, but I do believe we can learn from
defeats.

'Paris was a similar game to this and it was a shame after a lot of
positives against Nigeria. But it is not a settled side we have and
let's not blame people.'

Supporters will make their own judgments and Vogts may be ruthless as
well, having already jettisoned Steve Crawford and Dougie Freedman after
the 5-0 defeat by France. More will doubtless be told: 'Don't call us.'

Weir was outpaced on a simple through-ball over the top in the 16th
minute and, although he managed back, Chun-Soo Lee twisted beyond him
and the despairing Neil Sullivan, then did well to convert as Graham
Alexander made a desperate attempted tackle.

Alexander was relieved not to concede an own goal and Vogts had already
been out of his dug-out by then to berate Michael Stewart, with the
midfield diamond, Gary Caldwell at its anchor and the Manchester United
man at its point, outmanoeuvred time and again.

Hiddink, a Dutch disciple of Ajax, favours a 3- 4- 3 system which
ensured a flood of free-moving South Koreans going forward, with two men
on either flank often facing Alexander and Maurice Ross.

Caldwell was being bypassed all the time in the centre, with Scot
Gemmill and Allan Johnston having neither the legs, nor the nous, to
help him out or the full-backs. Vogts duly switched to a more
conventional 4-4-2 shape with four strung across the middle.

That stemmed the tide a little, but not the long-range shots which they
might have hoped Sullivan would stop. Gareth Williams and Scott Severin
were introduced at the expense of O'Connor and Stewart, with Johnston at
least being consistent - he was ineffectual up front as well as on the
left of midfield.

The hosts began the second half in similar mood to the first and, when
they duly scored their second, there was a question to be set against
Sullivan.

Jung-Hwan Ahn was allowed to shoot, but still the keeper went for a
drive to his left with his right hand and the South Koreans scented more
goals. Robbie Stock-dale replaced Alexander and Caldwell, more
comfortable with the cavalry around him in the shape of Williams and
Severin, began to make some tackles.

Let's remember he is a central defender by nature and has only ever
watched the Champions League - where Ferguson, Lambert and Matteo have
learned - on TV.

Johnston was finally withdrawn with Kevin Kyle given his debut, but no
sooner had the Sunderland reserve emerged than Scotland lost a third
goal.

Jong Whan Yoon was the scorer, but this time the wonder was why Sullivan
had been left-of-centre with the ball going home in the middle of the
goal? Dailly headed a free-kick over the bar, the 68th-minute incident
representing the first real goal-threat Scotland had presented.

But they did score from another set-piece. Gemmill delivered an inviting
cross and Dobie twisted to beat the keeper with a firm header, his a
goal a special moment for the 23-year-old from West Brom.

It did not alter the flow, however, and after missing a couple of
presentable chances, Hiddink's team crowned their performance with Jung
Hwan Ahn's run and imperious chip over Sullivan.

In the end, Scotland were grateful Wan Long Night was over.
