With the news that  Tae Min "Zacard" Hwang is joining the Korean army, GGL's  Jos "Zerter" Buyvoets takes a long look back at the illustrious Warcraft 3 player's career.  Once considered the strongest Orc player in the world, Zacard, in his time, was a trend-setter among his peers.

황태민(Zacard)이 한국 군대에 입대할려는 소식과함께 GGL의 Jos Buywoets(Zerter)는 유명한 워크래프트 3 선수들의 경력을 오랬동안 돌아보았다. 이전에 그의 시대에서는 세계에서 강력했던 오크 선수로서 생되었던 Zacard는 그의 동료들사이에서는 유행를 만드는 사람이였다.


The announcement that he would have to fulfill his mandatory army duty in South-Korea at the age of 23 became public in the western world on April 16th of 2007. Zacard was well on his way to qualify for China's Stars War when the news broke. He once helped Team Korea bring home the Star Wars title in the past; this year, however, they won't be so lucky to have his help.

23살의 나이에 남한에서 병력을의무를 이행해야한다는 발표는 2007년 4월 16일에 서부세계에서도 알려졌다. Zacard는 사건이 있었을때 중국 스타즈워 예선를 통과하는 길이 잘진척되어 있었다. 그는 작년과 올해 스타즈워 타이틀로 홈인 한국팀을 도왔지만 황태민의 도움을 받기에 그렇게 운이 좋지 안았다.


Tae min "Zacard" Hwang had a long and unique career as a WarCraft III professional gamer; his first experience in professional competitive gaming comes from Age of Mythology, a game for which he participated in several of Korea’s televised leagues hosted by MBCGame and Ongamenet. Switching to WarCraft III sometime after its release, he eventually joined the “Saint Proteam” and became a professional gamer representing the team in various competitions as a 19 year Korean teenager.

황태민(Zacard)는 워크래프트3 프로게임어로서 길고 톡득한 경력을 갖고있다. 프로게임하는 그의 첫번째 경험은 MBCGame과 Ongamenet에서 주최한 한국 TV리그에 여러번 참석했던 에이지어브미솔로지부터이다. 워크래프트3의 발표후 워크래프트 3로 바꾸었을떄, 그는 마침네 "세인트 프로팀"에 가입하고 19살의 한국 10대로서 다양한 대회에 팀으로 표현되는 프로게임어가 됐다.

This team contained some of the biggest talents in Real Time Strategy gaming, such as future BWI & WEG champion  Jung Hee “Sweet” Chun and two fold World Cyber Games champion  Kyung Hyun “SeLeCT” Ryoo. Stacked with talent, it would become the first case of Korean professionals signing with a European organization in WarCraft III as the team was recruited into the German organization SK Gaming beginning January 2004.

이팀은 미래에 BWI & WEG 챔피언 천정희(Sweet)와 2번의 WCG 챔피언 류경헌(SeLeCT)와 같은 RTS 게임하는것에 어떤 큰 인재를 포함했다. 2004년 1월 시작하는 독일의 기관 SK Gaming으로 보강된 팀으로서 워크래프트 3에 유럽 기관와 함께 한국 프로를 승인하는 첫번째 경우였다.


SK.Asia did extremely well in Korean team leagues and Zacard was one of its key players. But with the decline of the national Korean scene the squad became too big to support, and eventually dissolved in December of 2004 with Zacard and Sweet joining SK Gaming’s international division by January 2005.

SK.Asia는 한국 팀리그에서 극히 좋았고 Zacard는 핵심 선수였다. 하지만 팀에 큰도움이되는 애국적인 한국인 무대를 거절하고 결국 2005년 1월에 SK Gaming의 국제적인 분열에 합류하는 ZaCard와 Sweet와 함께 2004년 12월 해산되었다.

Despite the decline of the team, Zacard’s career flourished during this period. Little known on the international scene at this time, he was part of Korea’s team in a Europe vs. Korea show match in which he subsequently beat  Fredrik "MaDFroG" Johansson,  Ivica "Zeus[19]" Markovic and  Antoine "FaTC" Zadri.

팀 해산에도 불구하고, Zacard의 경력은 이 기간동안 활약했다. 이때 국제적인 무대에서 알려진것은 적었지만, 그는 그후에 프래드릭 요한슨(MaDFroG), 이비사마르코비치(Zeus[19])와 안토니 자드리(FaTC)를 이겼던 Europe vs. korean Show의 한국 팀의 일부였다.

Koreans and Europeans kept more to their own competitions during these days and so the few rare clashes between the best of both were watched closely. Zacard’s name as Korea’s top contender was definitely cemented when he took home the 2004 Korea World Cyber Games, beating among others  Jang Yong "FreeDoM" Suk,  Jae Wook "Lucifer" Noh and  Kang Seo "ReiGn" Woo.

한국인과 유럽인은 한동안 그들 끼리의 시합를 유지헀었고 그래서 최고들 사이에서는 거의 드문 충돌 가까히 보여졌다. 장용석(FreeDoM),노재욱(Lucifer)와 강서우(ReiGn)들 사이를 이기는 2004년 한국 WCG한국 홈에 놓였을때 한국의 최고 싸움꾼으로서 Zacard는 확실히 굳혀졌다.


젊은 리더

Zacard was seen as one of the big contenders at this World Cyber Games, but the insider favorite was Korea’s third place  Jang “Spirit_Moon” Jae Ho. This Korean Night Elf player had never lost a televised match vs. Orc (Zacard’s race of choice) in his career, and he was scheduled to meet Zacard in the round of 16 of the tournament.

Zacard는 WCG에서 훌륭한 싸움꾼의 하나로서 보여졌지만 인기있는 내국인은 한국의 3위 장재호(Spirit_Moon)였다. 한국인 나이트엘트 선수는 경력에서 TV 경기 대 오크(Zacard의 종족)결코 지지안았고 토너먼트 16라운드에서 Zacard와 만났다.

What was supposed to simply be a tough match for Spirit_Moon became competitive gaming history as Zacard beat him with a 2-1 score, instantly becoming the tournament favorite. Zacard proceeded to take down German champion  Daniel "Miou" Holthuis and  Yoan “ToD” Merlo and was now scheduled to face fellow Orc player  Manuel “Grubby” Schenkhuizen in the grand finals.

Spirit_Moon와 힘든 경기를 하기로되어있던것은 Zacard가 그를 좋아하는 토너먼트 2-1점수로 이김으로서 게임대회의 역사가되었다.  Zacard는 독일 챔피언 다니엘 홀수이스(Miou)와 유안메를로(ToD)를 격침하기를 계속했고 이제 최종결승에서 사나이 오크 마누엘 쇈카이젠(Grubby)를 직면하는 일정이 잡혔다.


2004 WCG

This 18 year Dutchman had been building up valuable experience in the Korean WarCraft III scene prior to the World Cyber Games and made good use of this in their encounter, besting Zacard with a 2-1 score. Thus the 20 year old Zacard went home with a silver medal and $10,000 USD on the bank, his first taste of big success after building up a reputation for so long.

18살의 네덜란드인은 WCG기간에 한국 워크래프트3무대에  가치있는 경험으로 성장했고 그들의 Zacard를 2-1점수로 이긴 교전에 잘사용했다. 그러므로 20살 Zacard는 은메달과 은행에 $10,000 USD와 함께 집으로 왔다.그에게 처음 그렇게 오랬동안 명성이 강화된후 큰성공을 맞보았다.

After becoming one of the first Koreans signed to a European team, the first Orc player to beat Spirit_Moon in a major competition and the first (and still only) Korean to win a WarCraft III medal at the World Cyber Games Zacard decided it was time to once again give his career a unique turn. He moved to Germany after the World Cyber Games.

유럽팀에서 사인한  한국인들중 하나가된후, 메이져대회에서 Spirit_Moon를 이긴 첫번째 오크 선수이고 WCG에서 워크래프트 메달를 획득한 첫번째(이고 아직까지 유일한) 한국인 Zacard는 특별한 기점를 그의 경력에 다시한번 주었던 때였다. 그는 WCG후 독일로 이동했다

Supported by SK Gaming, he would participate in the German Electronic Sports League professional series (EPS) as well as attend various competitions throughout Europe. He had some level of success throughout his stay, winning a strong tournament in Norway beating  Alborz "HeMaN" Haidarian and "MaDFroG" as well as finishing fifth in the German EPS.

SK gaming에게 지원받는 그는 유럽을 통해 여러대회에 참석하는 동시에 독일 전자 스포츠 리그 프로 시리즈(EPS)에도 참석했다. 그는 독일 EPS에서 5위로 마치며 알보르츠 하이다리안(HeMaN)과  (MaDFroG)를 이겨서 노르웨이의 강한 토너먼트를 우승하는 체류를 통해 성공적인 레벨이됬었다.

But he was troubled by homesickness throughout most of his stay and obviously was not playing on the same he level he was during his time in Korea. So he jumped at a chance to compete in the first season of the World E-Sport Games in Seoul (Korea), a televised Korean league with 16 international participants from around the globe (later returning to Germany to finish the EPS and then going back to Seoul again).

그러나 그는 체류를 통해 향수병이 문제가되었고 눈에띄게 한국에서 였을때와 같은 레벨로 경기하지 안으려고했었다. 그래서 그는 서울(한국)에서 지구의 16명의 세계적인 참가자와 함께 방송되는 한국리그  WEG의 첫시즌에 참가하는 기회에 이동했다(EPS를 끝내고 독일로 돌아간후 다시 서울로 갔다.).

At the World E-Sport Games, which started January 30  (2005) and would last until March 6, he did not drop a map until the semi-finals beating (among others)  Xiaofeng “Sky” Li,  Andrey “Deadman” Sobolev and  Dae Hui "FoV' Cho along the way. During this tournament he started using the Blademaster as his hero of choice, starting a trend which popularized the Blademaster into the most popular Orc hero until this very day. Facing Sky again in the semi-finals, Zacard came on top in a close 3-2 match and would now face Spirit_Moon in the grand finals in a re-match of their World Cyber Games clash.  

2005년 1월 30일에 시작되어서 작년 3월 6일까지 WEG에서, 그는 준결승까지 길사이에 리샤오펑(Sky), 안드래이 소볼레브(DeadMan)과 조대희(FoV)를 이기면 준결승까지 맵을 빼지안았다. 토너먼트동안 그는 바로오늘까지 가장 인기있는 오크의 영웅으로 블레이드마스터를 보급해 유행시키기시작한 선택된 영웅으로서 블레이드마스터를 사용하기 시작했다. 준결승에서 Sky와 직면해서 자카드는 빽빽하게 3-2 경기로 올라갔고 이제 WCG충돌의 재대결로 최종결승에서 Spirit_Moon를 만났다.


WEG의 Zacard

Spirit_Moon had in the mean time incorporated elements of a Chinese professional gamer into his Night Elf vs. Orc playing style and made it far more effective, resulting in very low odds being given to Zacard. His many fans hoped he could pull an upset again, but Moon beat him with a 3-0 score (not dropping a map throughout the tournament) and Zacard once again find himself the runner-up of a major tournament with another 10,000 USD to keep him comfortable.

Spirit_Moon은 나이트엘트 대 오크경기 스타일로 중국의 프로게임어의 통합하는 요소로 의미있는 시간을 가졌고 Zacard에게 주어진 매우 작은 가능성으로 만든 나이트엘트 대 오크를 더만이 효과적으로 만들었다. 그의 만은 팬들은 그가 다시한번 뒤업어 따네기를 바랬만 Moon은 3-0 점수로 그를 이겼(토너먼트에서 맵을 빼지안음)고 Zacard는 다시한번 그에게 10000 USD를 충분히 줌으로서 메이저 토너먼트의 차점자임을 감당해야했다.


2등을한 Zacard

After briefly returning to Germany (and being featured in the 2006 March edition of German playboy) he came back to Seoul for the second season of the World E-Sport Games which would last from May 23 to July 3. This tournament did not go so well for him. After losing to USA champion  Dennis “Shortround” Chan in the first groupstage, he found himself in an exceptional tough second group and went on to lose all his matches vs.  Kim Dong “GoStop” Moon, FoV and Spirit_Moon.

잠시동안 독일로 돌아온후(그리고 독일 플레이보이 2006 3월판에서 대서특필했다.) 그는 3월 23일에서 7월 3일까지 WEG의 2번쨰 시즌에 대해 서울로 돌아왔다. 토너먼트는 그에게 그렇게 좋게 되지 않았다. 첫번제 조별경기에서 USA챔피언 데니스 찬(Shortround)에게 진후 그는 예상외로 단단한 두번째 그룹에 감당했고 대 김동문(GoStop),FoV와 Spirit_Moon과의 경기에서 모두 졌다.


After the event he participated in the Korean WEG III qualifier. Despite a strong run up until the round of 8 he was stopped by one of the rising stars of the time, the Undead player and future Electronic Sports World Cup champion Lucifer. Suddenly finding himself not qualified for any on going competition, Zacard had build up quite a reputation in the mean time and was easily ranked among the very best of the world. This resulted in invites to competitions around the globe, including the BlizzCon event during October 2005.

이벤트에서 그는 한국 WEG III 예선에 참가했다. 8라운드까지 강한 준비단계에도 불구하고 이번에 떠오르는 스타중에 하나인 언데드 유져이고 미래에 ESWC챔피언 Lucifer를 막지못했다. 갑자기 대회에갈떄 예선탈락한 감당해야하는 Zacard는 일시적으로 평판이 꽤 강화되었고 세계의 최고들 사이에서 쉽게 순위가 매겨졌다. 2005년 10월동안 BlizzCon 이벤트를 포함해 세계에 대회에 초대되게된 결과이다.

Meeting many former rivals at this USA event, Zacard beat Shortround in round 1 of the event, ToD in round 2 and would lose to Grubby in the winner bracket finals. Once again beating ToD in the consolation finals, he was now set to once again meet Grubby in the grand finals of a major tournament.

USA 이벤트에서유명한 만은 유명한 라이벌을 만난 Zacard는 이벤트 1라운드에 Shortround, 2라운드에 ToD를 이기고 승자조 결승에서 Grubby에게 졋다. 이번엔 다시 ToD를 부활 결승에서 이긴 그는 이제 매이져 토너먼트의 최종결승의 Frubby를 다시만났다.

During what is considered one of the, if not the, best matches captured on television Zacard would lose the grand finals of a major international competition for the third time. Picking up 3,000 USD he would now again focus on trying to qualify for the World Cyber Games.

TV에서 포착되는 최고의 경기들중의 하나로 생각되는 것을 하는 동안 Zacard는 3번 매이져 세계 대회의 최종 결승를 졌다. 3.000 USD를 집어들고 그는 이제 WCG를 위해 예선을 치룰려고하는대 다시 초점을 마주었다.

As defending champion and silver medalist he was invited directly into the round of 8 of the Korean World Cyber Games. He was seeded against the rather unknown Night Elf player Ryong Lim "Ohjie" Dong. Widely expected to take the match, he lost to Ohjie in a close encounter.

디펜딩 챔피언과 은메달수여자로서 그는 직접 한국 WCG의 8라운드로 초대받았다. 그는 거의 알려지지안은 나이트엘프유져 임동룡(Ohjie)에 맞서는 시드를 받았다. 많은 사람들 사이에서  경기가 예상되었던 그는 근접전에서 Ohjie에게 졌다.

Failing to qualify for the World E-Sport Games and the World Cyber Games, Zacard’s career hit a bit of a slump at this time. He would successfully represent SK Gaming in various competitions but would not make an appearance at a major tournament again until April 21 2006.

WEG와 WCG 예선에서 떨어진 Zacard의 경력은 이때에 조금의 슬럽프가 쳐왔다. 그는 성공적으로 다양한 대회에 SK Gaming를 대표했지만 2006년 4월까지 다시 매이져 토너먼트에서 출현하지않았다.


He accepted the invitation to a month long event in Hangzhou (China), the Masters of the World E-Sport Games which would feature all top 2 finishers of the previous three events and a number of special invitees. He was seeded in a group with Sky and Grubby, as well as his former team mate Sweet who had recently joined the Chinese based team World Elite.

그는 중국 항주에서 한달동안의  앞서 2등으로마친 3개 이벤트와 다수의 특별이벤트 전부를 대서특필한  WEG Masters 이벤트에 초대를 제안받았다. 그는 최근에 중국에 기반을 둔World Elite에 그의 유명한 팀동료 Sweet뿐만 아니라 Sky와 Grubby와 함께 조에서 시드를 받았다.

Zacard, known for the long hours he put into his game, had obviously prepared well for the event but was in for some tough competition. He lost his first match versus Sweet (who had just claimed a WEG and BWI title prior to the event), and went on to lose versus Sky (who just had just claimed a WCG title) in two close matches. Since Sweet and Grubby lost to Sky as well, Zacard could force a tie-breaker by beating current ESWC champion Grubby. But in another chapter of their long rivalry, Zacard lost to Grubby once again.

게임안으로 들어간 오랜 시간동안 알려진 Zacard는 분명히 이벤트에 대해 잘분비되었지만 힘든경쟁안에 있었다. 그는 첫번째경기를 (앞서 WEG와 BWI 타이틀을 승인받은)Sweet에게 졌고 2번의 팽팽한 경기에서 (WCG타이틀을 승인받은)SKy에게 졌다.Sweet와 Grubby는 SKy에게 진후 Zacard는 현 ESWC챔피언 Grubby를 이기고 연장전을 강요했다. 하지만 그들의 오랜 라이벌의 또다른장으로 Zacard 다시한번 Grubyy에게 졌다.

Despite still being a top tier contender, Zacard was definitely on a downward spiral in his career and was slowly phasing away from being considered one of Korea and the world’s absolute best players. He competed in many tournaments throughout the remainder of the year including appearances in Europe representing SK Gaming in the NGL One and Warcraft 3 Champions League finals.

여태까지 상층 싸움꾼이 되었음에도 불구하고 Zacard는 그의 경력에서 떨어지는 나선형의 소용돌이였고 한국와 세계의 절대적인 최고 선수중 하나라고 생각되어지는것으로부터 느리게 멀어지는 양상이다. 그는 NGL One과 WC3L 결승에 SK Gaming으로 참석해 유럽에 나타난것을 포함해 그해의 나머지를 많은 토너먼트에서 참가했다.



Failing to reach the kind of success he had in the past in Korea, in July 2006 Zacard once again decided to give his career a new turn and joined his former team mate Sweet in signing up with a private sponsor that would facilitate a stay for them in Bejing (China). Somewhat re-energizing his career.

과거 한국에서 성공의 류에 이르다 떨어진 Zacard는 다시 한번 그의 경력을 새로게바꾸어주는것을  결심하고 중국 베이징에 그들의 거처를 마련해주는 개인적인 스폰서와 계약하고 그의 유명한 팀동료 Sweet에 합류했다.

He competed in many competitions in China, and was able to support himself through competitive gaming but never had the same kind of success he had in 2004 and 2005 again. By January 2007 SK Gaming severed their ties with him, stating they did not want to share the Korean professional gamer with his sponsors in Bejing and had asked him to choice between the two.

그는 중국에 만은대회에 참가했고 경쟁적인 게임하기에서 스스로를 지탱헀지만 2004와 2005에 했었던 어떤 종류의 성공도 없었다. 2007년 1월 SK Gaming이 속박함으로써  SK-Gaming이 베이징의 스폰서와 한국 프로 게임어를 공유하기를 원지안은상태에서 둘중 하나를 선택하는것을 그에게 요구했다.

As a result his appearances in international competition became even rarer (a poor internet connection didn't help), but Zacard remained an icon of WarCraft III professional gaming which helped him gain acceptance into competitions. He was invited to participate in two seasons of the WarCraft3 World War which is a televised series of show matches taking place in Seoul. He defeated  Kim Tae "Rainbow" In in his first appearance, and went on to lose to Moon again in his first appearance in the World War.

결과 세계대회에서 그의 출현은 드물(열약한 인터넷 접속은 도움이 안된다.)었지만 Zacard는 그를 대회에서 용인하는 워크래프트3 프로게임의 상징으로 남게되었다.그는 서울에 위치한 방송경기인 W3(WarCraft3 World War)에 2시즌 참석하는데 초대되었다.

Making a return a few months later in Warcraft3 World War Season 2, Zacard was eliminated in round 1 by  Park Se "ShowBu" Ryong in what seems like likely to have been his last appearance in a televised WarCraft III match.

W3 Season 2에서 후에 몇달 돌아온 Zacard는 방송 워크래프트3경기에 마지막 출연이 될것같이 보이는 1라운드에 박세룡(ShowBu)에의해 제거되었다.
